Beth,

Good news! You can fix the problem!

Take a look here http://www.powerballs.com/faq.php?q=6 for the solution...

If you were to look at the FAQ for this that explains how to take it apart. Once the shell is off, there will be a notch which is making the tapping sound. If you just shave that off then it works fine again. Use a corse piece of sand paper.

Just recieved my PowerBall two days ago, and am enjoying it. It sounded a bit noisy but, having never heard one before, let it go.
I had it at work, and looking through the powerballs site (on a break of course wink wink nod nod) found the article about checking for a dent in the rim.
I have no vice handy, and I'm not willing to step on it. I think right about the time my shoulder joints began popping I realized that I am not a human vice.
Power ball wins.
...moving along.
I decided that while I had the digital counter off I'd just go ahead and take the can of ermm canned air to it. To my surprize a quantity of chaff was ejected from the inner most bowels of the PowerBall.
Not sure if this was material from the packaging or was sucked in at some point in the last couple days.
T'any rate the ball is much more quiet now, and sounds smoother.
I don't know if it's advisable to use an air compressor for this as most average Joes don't have line driers and would possibly inject some water into the internals however, the canned air should be fine in that regard.
I will probably continue to do this from time to time unless it's not the right way to go..?

I used my wife's nail file to smooth the rough part of the ridge. It worked very well.
