View Full Version : One-handed flick start!

Learn to do the two handed start with thumb or two fingers first. I've shown a lot of friends how to one handed flick start it. You don't need those high RPM's either, for those of you who use the string and scream it up to 2500 with a neandertalesque pull. You can start it in the 800-900 RPM range. Hold it with the counter down resting on the knuckle of your ring finger, your middle finger wrapped around the counter, and your index finger around the center of band. Press down on the edge of the plactic with you thumb touching the gyro (like trying to make your thumb and ring finger touch). Rotate wrist so counter is away and gyro is at your chest. Flick ball away from you while flicking your thumb in the same direction. Mash on gyro and plastic hard and flick thumb to other side. Hold gyro up and rotate quickly but smoothly to get the gyro going. Akis does it in some of his videos. I can do it about 90% of the time and am up to 13520 after three weeks. Watch out Akis. ha

I can't do this with my left hand, but I can with my right...I think it's because I've always started the Powerball with it in my right hand, so I know just how to rotate it. My left, though slightly quicker, (13579 as opposed to 13476), isn't quite as co-ordinated.

But blimey, 13520 in just a few weeks? You're not normal! ;)

If anyone wants to practice one-handed flick starts, get a Metal...they're SO easy to get spinning at low revs. :)

One or two handed is acceptable, just ditch the wussy red string!

Hey there fellow powerballers! I got my beautiful new blue neon in the post 5 days ago, and mastered starting the little beast without the string on the second day (in both hands) - by giving it a quick flick of the thumb.
I havent tried the one handed flick technique yet, gonna be trying that tonight for sure :). Just looks soooo smooth when you start it with one hand, cant wait to try!

I havent got very high speeds out of my powerball yet, but been reading up about the pulsing technique where you lock your wrist and use your whole arm.
So far ive only managed a score of 10716 rpm, but gonna be trying the pulsing technique, and also spinning it anti-clockwise as that seems to get some people here good results.
Hopefully i'll make it onto the leaderboard soon (at position 300 or something...)

You still use your wrist when you pulse but but you have to pretty much lock your elbow and gyrate from the shoulder...now the pulsing does take practice, but now I can break 13K about every time and I don't go all out. I suggest you break at least 11.5-12K with wrist alone before you even begin to try to pulse...it takes some concentration till you get it down then it comes naturally. You need to get the wrist speed fast and tight, then move on to the pulsing. I just broke my personal best and am creeping up the leaderboard, haven't posted my new score yet, wanna try to break it again. I'm at 14089 but want to break 14100.

As far as the one handed flick start, just keep practicing. Mash your thumb on the wheel hard and flick it away as hard as you can till you get it down. I can one handed flick start it everytime now, moving on to try to do it left handed, need a new challenge. Read the fist part of the thread, it's the best way I can describe how to one handed flick start it.

What is your high score?

Yes, that's cool. I mean..I can spin two powerballs at the same time (and my record is over 26800rpm at this time) but I have to start both powerballs individuallly.

A not very good 13,622 :(

I'm hoping that getting a metal will push me over 14k

I managed it once the other day. Really struggle with my left hand though. In fact, the ONLY time I've one-handed started it with my left was at the same time as doing it with my right. I guess mirroring the motion with my right hand helped. It's just the thumb-flick I can't do very well with my left.

Ok now explain this to me. I've seen several people that say they have these insanely high scores like 26800. What on earth are you basing this on? My highest is 14089 and I thought I was gonna puke and Akis has 16200. Where in the hang is 26K coming from? Please any of you guys...explain this one to me.

donkapone

26800 with both hands at the same time. Like 13400 with one hand and 13400 with another.

Oh that's just insane...impressive, but insane.:o I guess next we'll be registering high scores for duels?! There would be no way on earth to prove it except for a video and AKIS would crush us all anyway. Maybe we should do a high score for rotating it between your feet.:D

I was just reading this thread again and noticed my old post with my old highscore. Just couldnt bare to leave it there without a little update hehe.
My new highscore is 11677 (90s strength = 14778), and i get it above 11k easily now, just cant break it again yet...
I have been trying the pulsing technique, but still need a lot of practice there, not feeling it at the moment!

I will soon send a video that you all may find interesting. James, you beat me to the punch with the double handed flick start:cool: , but I have a pretty good rival to that one...:D Got the double flick down pat now!

On a side note... are the scores for the double handed sessions combined from each hand separately or with a ball in each hand at the same time? I only had one ball at the time, but if you combine the scores, my top double score is 27203. 13055L and 14148R. I don't think I could hit those scores with a ball in each hand at the same time though. Plus I have two balls, but only one counter.:(

Rory, trade you a counter for a video!

A good contest/video would be to submit starting a ball in each hand at the same time, then revving up for score and finally showing the high scores for both balls at the same time. It's the only way not to cheat. Separately, my above score it true.

My double handed powerball record is something like 26000rpm+ (so 13k+ with each hand). Be aware..this is not as easy as it looks, because you cannot use the same technique as you do normally when using only one powerball. At least I can't.

Now, I will try to record a video of a 26000rpm+ and post it here.

Unfortunately, I cannot flick-start two powerballs at the same time, so I have to use a trick to do this.

Thanks to all you guys...especially Enda and the crew for posting the video. If you listen, you hear Robert (West Bromwick) and Gordon (Wellsend) in the background.

To Obiw4n: I'll send a copy to gyrotek!

To the Force: 13K in each had is "mad" - you gotta make a video of that! I bet I couldn't break 8K in each hand together...not that coordinated :(

To Donkapone: I'll shoot for three in one hand next...HA Of couse starting two in each hand does sound interesting. However I will need two more powerballs...Rory, uh-hum...you have my address.

James, Tim and everyone else across the lake, have a great day.

PS you should see the outakes from that video...

Why is 13k+ in each hand mad? Don't forget that my personal records are 14332 left and 14100 right. But ok..I will record a video asap. But please don't kill me if I don't manage 26000+ ok, since my left thumb is still not recovered from the injury. Will you be satisfied with a 25000+ video (12500+ each hand) too? ;-)

The Force
P.S.: I now vaguely remember to have set a 27000+ score on my brothers birthday last year. Something like 13600+ left and 13400+ right it was.

Why is 13k+ in each hand mad?

Steven,

Lend me your ear and be silent that you may hear! To put it in terms you can relate to... BLIMEY! ;)

12K in each hand sounds very difficult, 13K in each hand is "mad" and 14K just sounds impossible! I'm talking about at the same time.

I am definately not doubting your ability to do it. I'm just thinking in two hands at the same time is insanely hard for me. I pulse and rotate in opposite directions in each hand so it would take an unreal amount of concentration. I'm saying with two, I could probably hit 11 maybe 12 in each hand together, but 13 is probably out of the question. I'm sure you can eventually hit 14K at the same time with those scores.

That is just an awesome feat and folks can't appreciate it until they try it or see it...Remember, you are in a league that few people can touch.

Most people find it difficult to break 12K in either hand. You're the kind of guy that can break 13K while driving to work, eating chips, and watching the tele all at once without even thinking about it. Make the vid and shoot for 13K in each hand. Work on the single handed thumb flicks later, they will come easier than you think.:)

You are the man...or shall I say, The Force:cool:

In my mind the impressive stuff is the guy that can gun out those crazy high scores…I’m so stuck right now and going nowhere. But I plan on having my name highlighted again soon.

Well..I was actually quite surprised when I spun two powerballs at the same time. I was expecting to get synchronisation problems too (I also thought that you cannot concentrate on two moves at the same time). But surprisingly enough I managed to do it and the synchronisation happened by itself. In fact I think that the rotating force triggers my muscles to make a rotation.

What makes spinning two powerballs tough is simply the fact that you have to provide double energy so you get tired more quickly.

Anyway..I will try to capture a new video this weekend..so I give my thumbs some more rest. I might have already a 24k+ video available which I did in the past, but I am not sure.

Good luck,
