View Full Version : pulsing technique
im very new to powerballing and my personal best was around 11900, i read about wrist locking and then only pulsing the arm above speeds of 10,11k but how should u hold the ball when pulsing and how to pulse, i make above 11k any time but cant do more i think because i cant pulse

A difficult one to articulate - it is best described if you look at a video of Akis in action for example...take a look at the very last spin he makes in this little 43 second clip (http://www.powerballs.com/akis.wmv)...note the way his whole arm is assisting the spin in the final few seconds when the revs are really rising...some people move the arm even more at the height of the spin... Mark Chaplin (http://www.powerballs.com/videos/mark_chaplin.wmv) for example, really pulses his whole arm in that spin right up to the shoulder...and you can see the results that it gives from the score he makes...hope this helps, regards Rory
someone could explain the pulsing technique
....thx....
i see how they do it but i find when i try to pulse, i move my hand from side to side and generally lose momentum.

I think the pulsing technique would only really come into proper effect over about 13500 to 14000 revs.

I agree w/Tim. Don't even waste your time with trying to pulse until you can hit over 12k with your wrist alone.
after a half day of competeing with my friend we started to enter in the Akis called "hot mode" and from an average of 11300-11500 rpm i jumped to 12875:eek: and my friend to 12700:eek: rpm and the other day and since than i can easly:rolleyes: make 12500 and above but not yet 13k
u said u need 12k rpm for pulsing so what should i do next i have the speed but dont know:confused:
thx Akis for ur "tips"

It's been said in this thread that it's mostly wrist til 12k and then the "pulse" comes into play. I can hit 12k and am sure I have the strength to go higher. Is there some sort of transition phase? To use engine carburation as an analogy, transition from idle jet, to needle jet, to main jet, when an engine accelerates should be smooth but you can get flat spots on the change over if you have a mismatch! How do you transfer from one to the other smoothly and without any flat spots? I feel I've got a flat spot!:(

Thats exactly what i think too! I can hit 12.5k, and dont feel like im maxing out my strength when im doing it but i cant seem to get higher. Im sure this will come in time obviously, but i just cant get the hang of this pulsing business...
Spin it and it will come... :p

I can hit up to 13k using my wrists only and I can hit up to 14k using my arms additionally.

P.S. Still, I am not able to explain clearly what I am doing exactly to go over 13k. The rotational moves tend to become more and more oval moves and in the end it seems to be more translational moves (but still there is a twist in the movement if you understand what I mean).

I would say the same as The Force...I still feel like I'm stirring my wrists, even at up to around 13500 revs.
I can sort of produce the effect I'm going for without holding the Powerball in my hand, but not sure it's right - sitting here at my desk at work, if I tense up all the muscles in one arm, (and I mean all the muscles...make my fist into a ball and squeeze tight and tense the muscles in my wrist, lower arm, upper arm and even my shoulder), I can make my arm vibrate rapidly. This is what I believe "pulsing" refers to. Not a rotation of the wrist, but a tiny vibration of the muscles.
I've just never been able to achieve that while holding the Powerball...I think it's something that just comes with practise and only at those really high speeds. Plus, looking at videos of the top Powerballers, I think I've only really seen this effect with Akis, and maybe Mathieu Tauzin, as he hardly moves his arm at all.
Its like Adrena1in said: tighten up the muscles in your arm making it behave more like a rigid spring. More tension = higher frequency = higher rpm.
I would also suggest trying to rotate "inwards";
Left hand: clockwise rotation
Right hand: anti clockwise rotation
When using the "outwards" rotation I have a hard time reaching 10K rpm, having the feeling of not being able to use all my power.
Using the "inwards" technique I can reach 13K+ rpm.
But then again...this is maybe a personal matter.

Yes, it IS a personal matter :-)
My records are 14k+ outwardly and 7k inwardly ;-)

The direction of rotation is just what you're used to. When I got stuck at around 12900 I tried reversing my direction of rotation. At first I would get around 9000, but that score slowly crept up as I got more used to it, and my record got to around 11800 before I gave up and went back to my normal method.
Now, if I'm doing gentle exercise, or some extreme endurance, (over 1 hour), I'll alternate between one direction of rotation and the other, doing something like ten minutes one way, then ten minutes the other way.

Not sure about pulsing but I like to do what I call "surges". I start off with my strongest right hand and slowly spin it up, to say 4000 -5000 rpm's and hold it there for 30 seconds or so. Now I "surge" by spinning it up slowly a little faster and hold it there for another 30 seconds. I continue this until my right hand/arm/wrist starts to burn pretty bad, now I switch to my left hand doing the same thing, except my left elbow hurts and I don't try to go as fast as I can with my right. When my left hands burns, I switch back to the right, surge it up slowly, now I will try to spin it up as fast as I can. Word of advice: don't spin it up as fast as you can on the first try, you can easily hurt yourself this way, I have. My personal best on my Blue Neon Pro is 11990, I haven't broken it yet, but I don't try for it often. I prefer the surging as it really gives a good workout, try 5 or 6 sessions with about a 5 minute break between sessions. This is how I got my high score up from about 9000.

DarrinSimon - that's the sort of thing I would definitely recommend to someone, long sessions of around 50% to 80% maximum effort, to really get those muscles burning, and yes, DEFinitely always a bit of warming up first.
When my record was hovering around 12000 rpm I tried a one-hour constant-spin session, in which I clocked up 565,000 revs...(averaging about 9400 rpm). Ten minutes later I broke my record by over 800! :)
I'm currently trying to focus myself on this "pulse" technique thing though. I'll get the Powerball up to about 10k, then try to just vibrate my arm (lower-arm I think) back and forth, in tiny motions, rather than thinking about stiring it. So far, so bad. :(

Hello all,
I have watched Akis and the rest, but I can't grasp the idea of how "pulsing" works! My personal best is 11,810 but it seems no matter how hard I push, the ball seems to stall and not wan't to go any faster? Pulsing might be the key, yet trying it the way I think it works yeild no results. If someone could explain pulsing or why I can't get above 12,000, I would really appreciate it! I have a metal too and it does not give me the stall problem, I get worn out first.
Thanks Naitsabes
