View Full Version : Starting without string
I still have my string, though I'd like to learn how to start my new powerball without it ( just so I don't have to cary the string around) I read in the FAQ what it says but it is kind of unclear. Can anyone further explain?

Well man, it's something you learn sub-counsciously with practice...
You can get the most exercise by spinning the ball at the slowest speed that you can. You have to know that with a finger, you can, with enough practice, spin the ball up to 1600-2000 RPM... try keeping the ball spinning at that speed, it's really tough.
So, when you throw the ball with your finder, try to speed it up as fast as you can. Sorry if the language isn't great, I have trouble saying this in french, so... the purpose os to make the rotor turn on itself, for that, you need to make a circular motion with your wrist. When, spinning it with your finger, you reach 1500-2000 rpm, you have to force the rotor to turn on itself. (Because at this speed, he doesn't alone) You should then hear a "rubbing" sound at this point( something like woosh woosh wooosh). Finally, when you feel it has accelerated, you can spin the powerball slower, and "look" or rather, hear, if the speed is enough. (When it is the case, you hear un buzzing sound [brrrzzz, which "turn" in the powerball]). Now you can use the powerball in a normal way.
I hope I've been enough clear in my exepressions, and hope that it will help you. Remember that it is above all a question of practise (3-4 days).

I have never had a string!
I got the powerball from a friend who had lost the string. It took me a couple of days to get it going every time. It was very difficoult to begin with.
The above way is quite expressive of what i do to start it.
Keep wizzzzzzzzing!

but with what finger do you start the 1500 spin..its really hopeless for me

Place powerball in left hand.
expose the spinning ball part. Use your right thumb to spin it, then power it up with your left after you get the RPM going with the thumb spin. Works everytime

I would just like to say that skydarkings description is bang on, and of much greater help to the naive powerballer (me) than even the video, which cant describe what you need to feel and when. it is a shame its not the 1st available post on the subject as i'd been through about 6 others before finding this. thanx again

A note of clarification: the Techno model is almost impossible to finger-start. The easiest is the 20Hz regular & Pro, then the Neon. I've never successfully finger-started a Techno, & not for lack of trying :)

Our comments:
Interesting to hear you say that Fraser - in truth, while there is a subtle difference in the internal frictional relationship between the rotor support band and inner sphere platter on the Techno when compared to the other models, it is still relatively easy to finger start this model too and should present no problems to you if accomplished with the 250hz or Neon balls...regards Rory
