View Full Version : Arms?

If I lock my lower arm adjacent to my body (Like Akis) and JUST use my wrist I can't get above around 9k unless I start to use momentum from my arms..

Is using your arms a valid or clever thing to do? Suggestions?.. ta

I'm not particularly big and I average only around 10.7k, and my top is 11,394.

Our comment:
From experience, I'd say that, once over 11k, the best powerballers will "lock'" the wrist solid on the joint and pulse with the arm instead.

So, while a wild swing of the arm won't cut it for high scores, a small, tight rotation [of the arm] is an essential component when trying to break 12k - you simply won't do it with the wrist alone and that is why someone with big guns on him like Akis, can slaughter the 15k mark day in and day out! (Though, take a look at Mark Chapmans technique in second place...he is getting his shoulder and entire body in on the act along with the arm...and it seems to work!)

Interesting, then maybe the common mindset of "WRIST WRIST WRIST!" technique should be questioned...

That being said, how does one "pulse"?

Cheers.

Not questioned at all actually. In fact, the principle remains as strong as ever; it is pure wrist action which takes the rotor up to (around) the 10k mark before settling into a solid lock (on the joint) against the massive gyroscopic inertia which has built in the ball (at that speed) to allow the arm tackle this growing resistance.

You need serious power in the wrist to keep it from succumbing to that growing inertia while the arm builds the rotor speed even higher, in turn creating even more inertial resistance and putting higher pressure on the wrist joint to 'break' (not literally break of course, but to become the weak link in the solid line between the shoulder and Powerball sphere as the arm 'pulses' the ball faster and faster).

I use that word Pulse as it accurately describes the action of the arm as it drives hard through the 12...13...14...Akis barriers with the ball and basically looks as if there is hardly any movement whatsoever except tiny little circular 'pulses' as the muscles bulge to sustain the growing rotor speeds.

English was never my strong point in truth..

Quite.

I simply meant respective to scores above 10-11k, obviously, the wrist action is still the most important factor, but baring in mind most people aren't made from titanium and hydraulics, I don't think many people will continue to move their wrist past 11-12k.

I mean, I'd love to, but it's not gonna happen, so I shall continue to persue my interest in "pulsing" :D

Thanks.

When I work the Powerball up to around 10k I pretty much only use my wrist, in fairlyobvious rotations. From 11k to around 12.5k I tend to try to lock my wrist and move only my lower arm.

However, I find that when getting to 13k - 13.5k I end up having to loosen my wrist again and work the Powerball using my wrist too, just to squeeze out those few more revs.
