View Full Version : ianb123's Progress Log
Hi guys (and ladies!) this is my first post here, but I've been lurking around for a few weeks. I got my first powerball in January '07 - a 250Hz Neon Pro and I was instantly addicted! It took me a while to get the hang of it but I gradually increased my score. Right now it's at 12471 but I cannot seem to get past this at all. Its been my "mountain" for a while, but I would love to eventually reach 13k.
A month or so ago, I decided to buy the 350Hz metal and boy did I get blisters! My score on this is 10366, again I'm eager to improve and get this to 11k.
So basically, I'm asking you guys for advice on improving my speed scores. I know the general consensus is 30s/90s strength training followed by a few speed runs, but I think I'm going about it in the wrong way. Well, just thought I'd introduce myself and let you know my long term goals, sorry if this post was long!
Ian
250Hz Neon Pro - 12471
350Hz Metal - 10366
Scratch that, just improved my metal to 10753 :)
i keep reading about this grip liquid, can anyone tell me a little more about it?
Ian
Another improvement on the metal! Managed to get up to 11248, but still no luck with the plastic. I have a pain in my right arm though, can't be good, maybe i should rest it for a few days.

A few days rest will almost certainly do you good. It is important to have periods of rest to let your muscles recover.

Hey I got my first pb in Jan 07 :D
Glad you signed up to the forums.
I tried a warming up my arm with a couple of 30s strength runs, waiting 15 or so minutes then trying a speed run. Managed to improve my top score by about 50 revs, not much but its all good right? So now I'm at 12517, creeping up to 13k!
Also recorded my first 30s score, a measly 5321. I'm sure I can improve on this as I felt the last 10 seconds I slacked off because my arm was tired.
Does anyone have any opinion on why my plastic score is much worse in relation to my metal score? Do they both require different techniques? for what its worth, I'm 6ft5 and have huge hands lol, so I find gripping the metal much more comfortable? Maybe I'm just making excuses because my technique is so poor :D
Ian
Hi not sure on whether they require different techniques or not as i dont have a metal but if you get on better with a the bigger size of the metal then maybe you could increase the size of your plastic with something (maybe duct tape) i could be completely wrong as it may off balance the ball but im sure some of the more experienced users could tell you something about that!?
Good news!! That day off seems to have done some good! Warmed up with a couple of 30s, followed by a few bursts and managed to break that 13k barrier with 13021! Only managed it once but I'm just happy to have got there. I want to try and improve my 30s scores next.
Regarding people's 30s scores on this forum, does everyone use both hands? or stick with just one? my arm feels like its gonna fall off after 25s lol.
:D
Ian
Edit - I guess this is what a "hot mode" feels like, just improved to 13195

Because my left hand is generally pretty naff compared to my right, my 30s records are always one-handed. I've never really done a proper two-hand run though to be honest. My speed usually dies lots from about 15 or 20 seconds in. :o

Glad to see my advice payed off. Huge congrats Ian :)
BTW 1,000th Post W00t!!!

Well done on the new records.
My 30s record is with two hands but I have the advantage of having two slightly above average very even hands, which when combined together are well above average. I would kill to be able to get it with one hand though.
Hi guys, haven't posted for a few days but I've been working hard. Decided to improve my left hand and improved it over 1000 revs in one session. Obviously I'm still getting used to the proper technique!
I tried a 90s run last night, but after about 45 seconds my arm wants to fall off, so only got about 13000 - not even worth writing down lol. I still cannot beat 13195 (speed) with my RH, i have no idea how to improve my technique - is this usual? To get to a certain level and plateau for a week or so?
P.S Also played around with the metal but didnt improve either. What do people suggest is the difference is strength/technique needed for metal compared to plastic?

Its VERY normal to run into a rut, but don't worry with some practice you'll be out in no time.
90s runs are tough at first, make sure you dont start to fast. Try this: right before you run put the counter in speed mode and rev it up to about 9000 rpm. Keep that pitch in your head, then when you start your 90s run, rev the ball up to that and hold it. It will seem slow at first, but it will eventually start to hurt... and if you have any extra energy in the last 15-20 seconds, then give it a little extra gas. The reason I say all this is because consistency is the key to good endurance scores.
p.s. since your LH is weaker, you could do one of two things: 1. use your RH for most of the 90 seconds or 2. go slightly above average on your right, and slightly below on your left while keeping the time spent on each relatively balanced
Thanks Installed, I'll bear that in mind when I try again. I've finally bought the right screwdrivers to open my powerball and gave it a good clean, maybe that will help. It definately seems to be running smoother!
edit - improved my 30s to 5542 with my right hand, and that included a regrip! if I can just increase my endurance, I'm sure i could go 30s without adjustin my grip
Today I tried my hardest to improve the scores I set a week ago. Started off warming up with a couple of 30s strength then straight into speed. My record for 250Hz speed is 13195, but ive found over the past week I cannot get anywhere near that. Its so frustrating because im hitting like 12400 even after warming up. Does anyone think cleaning the ball slows it down until its been "worn" back in? Im using a neon right now, and I've had it for a while, maybe its time to invest in a 250Hz pro.
Anyway, I decided to move onto the metal as I havent really touched it for a while. Managed 10400 with my LH and 11502 (+150ish) with my right which I guess is ok. Any improvement is good at the moment!!
I might not try a speed attempt at all for the next week, and will concentrate on setting better endurance scores. Thanks for sticking with me through my powerball journey lol, hope i'm not becoming a bore to anyone.
Ian
edit - after browsing the site and watching some videos, i actually found one of the "eduardo" technique. I really dont see how this can be legal as there is nowhere near the amount of strength/endurance as the traditional technique.
My 250hz pro just arrived and first spin I broke my LH speed record followed by my RH. Shows how bad my old ball must have been lol. Also added around 100 revs to my 30s score. Then picked up my metal and improved by 40 revs or so to 11545! Im not sure how long it takes to wear a new ball in, but i hope to have improved on all my records by next week!
Ian
edit - new ball ftw! 13560 (RH) Bring on the 14k!! My left hand is AWFUL in comparison now.

Nice one, you're not far from 14k at all really.
I had some new Powerballs that had been sitting in their boxes for ages, and it took about 10 or 15 minutes to work them in and they were performing quite a bit faster that my previous ball, which I thought was really quick. (One of the new ones out-performed the other in fact!). So you could surprise yourself with a 14k score sooner than you think! :)

I agree with Tim.
Catch the right warm up with the right ball on a bit of form and you could see an insane increase.. or sessions of increase like you have now. Just remember 2 sessions in a week is more than adequate if your having like 5 or 6 then you might be overdoing it and harming yourself more then benefiting from it. :D

It's pretty difficult not messing around with it everyday though, too addictive :P
My neon broke a few days ago and my new rotor came today - its working perfectly now! Just like to send my thanks to the powerballs team for a quick service, was really impressed.
Now i can set a dual record :D
Had quite a long session yesterday, warmed up with a couple of 30s and managed to add +10 revs to my score bringing it to 5702. Then had a couple of 90s runs but I didn't note those scores.
Speed was a bit of a joke really, had 6 runs between 13k and 13.4k with my RH and 5 LH runs between 12k and 12.1k.
Kind of disappointed really, my left hand needs so much work but I just cant seem to push it to 12.5k.
With a top speed of 13560 what kind of 30s/90s record should I have? I think I'm quite a way behind most people in terms of endurance with scores of 5702 and 15321.

Depends on if your doing 1 or 2 handed with 13560 you should be able to do 6000 for 30's but your left is letting you down if you go two handed
I think I was around 17k at 13560 but I was getting that with both hands.
So high 16k - 17k I think should be achievable.
These days if I'm hitting 13.5k with both hands I'm getting 18-18.4k
How long do you spend on each hand in the 90's runs? How many changes?

hi, well im the same right now my left hand max is about 12.6 k and my right hand now is 13532 i do 16 k 90 sec speed run using both hands but evidently my left is far from being equal with right so i guess when i get my left hand stronger ill hit 17 k. Ian keep trying

I probably spend 30 seconds on my right, 30 on my left then another 30 on my right.
Had a longish session this afternoon, went pretty well all in all.
1. Improved 30s score to 5859.
2. Improved LH to 12484.
Also had ~12 runs between 13k and 13.5k but no new record.
Ian
Very Nice scores Ian, I'm powerballing since October 06, and our records are very similar...
250Hz: 13.659
30sec. 6.050
Keep training and Congratulation!:)
PS: Any video??
No sorry I dont have any videos. I do have two webcams but I have no idea how to make my own video. Guess I should do some research as i would be in the top 100 metal if i had recorded my run!
Hey, had a VERY short session this morning and managed to catch myself in pretty good form. Managed to break my RH 250Hz speed with a 13679 (+119). 14k is ever closer.
Also broke my RH 350Hz speed with 11573 (+28). Shame my left hand seems to be stuck in a rut.
Have dug out my cam, so will try and get it working today!
Ian
Edit (5 hours later) - Just randomly had another few goes without warming up and hit 13711 (+32). Weird
A couple of weeks ago I got sent a replacement rotor for my neon blue. Its really smooth, but I cannot get anywhere near my scores with it. The maximum i've achieved is about 12.4k (then straight after i picked up my other ball and scored 13.5k). Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Does it feel like the new rotor is vibrating? Or does it feel really smooth and just reluctant to speed up? If it's the latter then don't worry, it needs the new support band to get worn in a bit. Stick with it and it'll speed up.
It feels pretty smooth in my opinion. How long are we looking at to wear the support band in? I'm pretty sure ive spent a couple of hours using it in total over the past week or so.
When I got my 250Hz pro out of the package, on my first spin I hit >13000 and that wasn't worn in at all!
New record again - 13797 :)
I seem to be breaking records every day lately! My left hand still has more power left in it, but I havent got the technique down yet.
250Hz - LH 12747 (+263)
350Hz - LH 10436 (+35), RH 11580 (+7)
My current goal is to improve my LH to 13k/10.5k on the 250Hz/350Hz. Then I'm hitting the endurance hard as I feel my scores are still weak in this area. Breaking records is a great motivator as I feel like I'm actually getting stronger :)
Ian
Today I decided to have a couple of goes at a 90s run and managed a best score of 15930 with both hands. My high score for speed is 13797, so i worked out that i'm running at 77.0% of this over 90s. I've seen people with top speeds much higher than mine and yet they run at >80%!!
I understand that most people are better in either speed or endurance, but I'm not happy with either of mine :o.
Also decided to set a 30s LH record and managed 5430.
Please help me with my endurance as I suck bigtime lol.

your speed is higher than mine and i have just a little more than you in 90 sec (16324)
your 30 sec runs are 99% same as mine both hands, only advice is keep training make longer sessions in endurance, rest well and you will see ther result. Next Tuesday or Wednesday im going to increase my speed and strenght record (i hope) :D
Hi people, my CoC grippers came today - wow I am so bad. Can do aboout 3 reps with #T RH and 1 rep with LH. Still got a long way to go! (I have no idea how you guys close #1, especially you pete as I have 6 years on you!)
My powerballing might be taking a back seat for a while as I started my first proper job today and I'm getting used to the LONG hours! Will try my best to keep with it though as I really enjoy breaking new records.
Ian
#T?, how much weight??, I have the 60 lbs and I will buy the #1 next month, I thought that I will be heavyer...:p
The #T is 100lb, i can do a few reps on it now, and I can close the #1 once with my RH. But my hands are in a mess, the skins just falling off now lol!
Had a very short session with the 250Hz earlier and I'm really confused. I just cant get above 12k! I don't know whats wrong with me! Tried 3 different balls and they aren't broken.
Ian
Mybe you are to tired..., try resting a few days.
PS: Thanks for the #T...
