View Full Version : Stiff wrist and fingers - Is this serious?

I've had wrist pains many months now, but I still have powerballing many times a week. But now I think it's more serious. In last two months, my right hand wrist and fingers has become very stiff. For example when I stretch the fingers apart from each other as much as possible, the space between thumb and index finger is much smaller than in left hand. This affects straight to grip strength and my current form, I think. And secondly, I can barely do push-ups, because it hurts so much.

Do I have tendovaginitis or something, and what should I do from now on?

Sorry to hear that Jarkko.:(

Whilst waiting for someone who knows better to give you a more educated opinion all I would say is give it a rest for few weeks.

Not sure if gentle stretching exercises would help any.

Hope you can recover soon and get your form back.;)

This sounds very uncomfortable.

I have to say, it doesn't sound like tenovaginitis, but I have to know more to be more confident with my diagnosis.

Where does it hurt exactly?
When is it most painful? - Doing what activities? (Gripping and press ups only or other things as well?)
What time of day is it most painful?

Hope I can provide you with the reassurance you need.

Mostly it hurts at left side of the wrist. Especially when I do this stretch http://www.beastskills.com/wrist%20stretch%201%20small.jpg.
Then when I try stretching fingers apart I can feel something at right side of wrist, back of the hand. There is also snapping when doing certain movement by thumb.

When powerballing, it hurts at first, sometimes very badly. But then when I'm properly warmed up, it doesn't hurt at all (at least not much) and I can do even over 3 hour session.

I'm kind of use to it, so I don't remember when it hurts, but mostly at beginning of a powerball session and doing push-ups. Also hurts little when I lifting my dumbbells. Time of the day doesn't make difference.

I can't explain any better, but obviously there is something wrong and I think I need a long rest.

The clicking and pain on moving your thumb might actually signify a tenovaginitis as you said at the start.
The fact it goes away when you warm up suggests it is chronically inflamed and as such a break from powerballing might be a good idea.

Before you make that decision though, a few more questions if I may?

How old are you?
Do you work? If so what do you do?

It may be that the powerball is keeping you moving and stopping might be the wrong thing to do.

21 and I don't work.

Not maybe complete rest for right, because I still need it to keep the ball going when I'm spinning with left and some 5000-6000 rpm don't hurt at all. Is that okey?

OK, so you're not old and your work isn't doing it. ;)

Yup, I would suggest spinning within a pain free speed for a week and see if it feels any better.
Let me know.

Hope things are back on track now Jarkko. Your 12.7k Metal score recently would certainly seem to show they are! :)

It's still stiff and thumb movement is not as good as in left hand, but it's not hurting anymore. That thumb might affect a little my grip position and strength, but I use grip spray so that's not a problem. At least with metal it's a must although I have got 12051R and 12222L with mirror clear metal without any grip aids.

You should go consult a specialist
