View Full Version : Technique error? Pain in right hand

I'm left handed and after a session on friday I gave myself a blister so I left the ball alone over the weekend for a bit of healing. After my friday session I developed a pain in my right hand. Difficult to describe - its kinda 'in' the palm of my hand, between the bones leading to the two smallest fingers. Someone suggested it could be the tendons recovering after the session. Come sunday, pain gone but blister not... hehe, so I left i another day.

I've picked up the ball again today and bam, the pain is back within one spin. Applying pressure to the area unsurprisingly increases the pain. Typing this I can feel it niggling but nothing major. I'm waiting for back surgery at the moment so any pain that isn't related to that is a piece of cake :D

Any suggestions? I'm also starting to develop calluses (sp) on the inside of the 2nd joint of my little fingers. Could the two be related? I'm hazarding a guess its down to the way I grip the ball but any recommendations appreciated.

Hi,

Do you hold the pb with the counter facing into your palm?
Because, if you do, it could be to do with the counter digging into your palm.

Its a couple of little muscles between the metacarpals of your fingers, called the interossei muscles.
When you grip the powerball you will push your little finger around the ball so that all five fingers are roughly evenly spaced. This means the inside edge of the little finger will be touching the ball, not the fleshy pad.
Now when you grip, the other fingers will pull in a natural way i.e. towards the fleshy pad, but the pull on the little finger will be sideways.
In order to then hold onto the spinning ball you have to grip harder and the muscle needed to do this for your little finger is the interossei muscle.

Basically, this is the weaker muscle that is being trained and therefore will be the first to develop DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. An entirely normal response to training.
A combination of sensible ball spinning (not going for the high scores) and periods of rest should see the strength improve and then you will be hitting the really high scores.

For what its worth, had the exact same thing and it lasted about a week to 10 days. Didn't stop me spinning though!:D

Oh and forgot to add.
The callus you are developing is in exactly the right place - on the inside of your little finger.
Which adds fuel to my theory!!

SPOT ON!

You guys are the best :) :) Glad to know I'm not doing any major damage :D I had a feeling it may be due to a weakness, what with me being a leftie and it only occuring on my right.

Arran - I'm afraid thats what caused my blister on my left hand :( The counter doesn't sit flat in my palm and caused my little 'bump' as my kid calls it :) At least if it scars I'll have a marker of the best place to hold the ball, hehe. :p
