I've had my powerball for 3 days.I learned how to finger start it on the first day and my biggest high score is over 12000 rpm.I think it's important to understand how it works. The thing that keeps the rotor spinning is the wight spinning perpendicularly the speed meter. So if you want to finger start your powerball you must get about 1000-1500 rpm with your thumb and then try to make the weight spin.
This is my advice.

I've found that to finger start a neon powerball, you have to get it to light up. But i don't know about other PBs.

Very true, Thats how i first learnt it on my first powerball ( green neon )

soon as it lights then you can start spinning, always remember to hold the powerball very firmly, dont put your thumb on the rotor ( yellow ball ) put your thumb on the curve of the plastic case and then skim the rotor ( yellow ball ) and you will gain alot more speed if done correctly, 1500-3000 i have done.

If you can get it to light up with a flick then it is a very good flick and you should be able to start it easily. Normally i don't get it to light up when i thumb start though, it takes me a few spins of the wrist before it gets to that speed.

I can normally get it started from between 600 - 1200 rpm from a thumb flick.
