16-03-07:
Today I broke the 11k barrier on the metal from 10.901 > 11.132 > 11.194.
After my warmup I immediately got 11.132 which I didn't expect at all, so didn't get it on video. Which gave me just that little extra motivation to break it again, and luckily I did. At this moment it puts me on place #57. Also a minor improvement with the left had on the metal: 11.151 > 11.194. I have got the strenght to do better, but I have to work on the rythm first.

Good going Dariuz69,
almost 300 revs on the metal in one go, that's impressive!
Keep up the good work :)

Can't seem to improve my 250 scores that easy in contrast to the metal.
I wonder what is a normal difference in score between the 250 and the metal.

Just a tiny update on my scores:

Right hand 250Hz 12.636 > 12.644
Left hand 350Hz 10.194 > 10.212

Nothing impressive, just crawling really slowly to 13k on the 250Hz :)

Couldn't get anything decent on the live comp. yesterday. My max was 12.000 (:o). But after a good cleaning of the powerball today I managed to get 12.651 and 12.697 without a decent warmup. I think I'll have a good rest this weekend and try again on monday.

Got a nice 11 rpm improvement on the 250Hz right hand 12.697 > 12.708 :) After that I started with the metal and improved my left hand record by 226 rpm from 10.212 > 10.438. Also got around 5 scores between those two with the left hand. With the right hand metal I managed to get two scores above 11k, 11.1xx and 11.03x and around 5 10.9xx scores. I hope on the next session I will break my 11.194 record :p

I managed to get 12.651 and 12.697 without a decent warmup.Blimey, you should have carried on with that session. I find I can add around 1000 rpm to my "un-warmed-up" scores once I'm warmed up properly.

I find it a good way to test roughly how well I'm going to do in any session. I do a completely un-warmed-up speed run, and if it's within about 1000 of my record then I know I'll be on form.

I don't think thats a good idea really. Its like a 100 m sprinter before a race decides to run the length and see what time he gets when he hasn't warmed up, and he estimates he will do it a second faster when he's actually warmed up. But running straight away without a warm up probably going to tire or pull his muscles so he'll do even worse when he's warmed up.

For powerball if you do a speed run straight off doesn't it blister your hands really quickly? Because you are putting force on your hands when it's not used to it :o

Adrena1in
11-04-2007, 13:50
It's only a single speed run, for maybe 1 or 2 seconds of effort. :o

But you're right to mention it though, I wouldn't suggest repeated speed runs without a proper warmup.

Dariuz69
11-04-2007, 14:11
I just did a few runs to test my cleaned powerball. Normally I do a proper warmup before trying the real speed runs.

I'm the same as Tim yet again here (I seem to copy a lot of what he does). I often do a quick run from cold and in the same way as Tim, if i can get within about 900-1000rpm of my record i'm on for a hit.
I also want to be able to hit 14K ona cold run :D
Best first run i ever did was 13956, and that was before my current record.

Best first run i ever did was 13956, and that was before my current record.

I often wondered about this notion of the improvement that occurs after the initial speed run and the difference in score after getting into a hot mode.

In my last last session, my initial cold run was 14600 something. Then, when I was warmed up I was over 15k most of time for the rest of the session. I did have the 2 runs that showed up as 15600 and 15700 on the Powerballalyzer, but unfortunately the Powerball counter didn't pick them up the same way. So in a way, I experienced about 1000 rpm improvement in that session too. :)

Next time I have a session, I'll write down my initial score in cold-mode and let you know how it goes.

That's a good way to gauge how you will do on the day of the session. Nice to see others have found this too. :)

Always Powerballing,
Duane Cash

I'm really happy about those improvements on the metal, but I want to improve the 250Hz scores aswell, but it seems near impossible to get it over 12k. After a 10.998 right hand metal run I tried the 250Hz and barely got over 12k. Maybe I should consider getting a new one.

Is this the sign of a worn out support band? I think so, since it's getting harder and harder to even get past 12k.

If the new powerballs are currently equipped with the new rotors (thicker fins, am I right) I will order one soon. And if it is possible get a new support band with the same shipment.

I'm no expert here, but from the angle you showed it the support band seems fine, apart from the axle hole that looks a bit bigger than normal. What do the washers look like?

Also, what does the tracks look like on which the axle runs? Smooth? or full of small indentations and rifts?

Aren't the axel holes supposed to be much smaller than what mine looks now, could it be that because it starts to vibrate more after passing 10k rpm. Washers look fine to me, but haven't got new ones to compare them to.

The tracks aren't that smooth as in the beginning (obvious after more than a year of using it :)), but no indentations or rifts I noticed. I can take a few pics of the upper and lower shell if you want to take a look. Just have to take it apart again.

Jammy

Might be a good idea to also take a close pic of the top view of the support band. I won't be able to give any further opinions, but maybe one of the more experienced guys will be able to deduct a conclusion here.

Dariuz69
22-04-2007, 12:37
It could be that it's just getting old and I should just get a new one instead.
One thing I did notice was some kind of little crack in two of the fins (5th pic is the one that is clearly visible, couldn't get a good shot of the other). Washers and supportband look normal, apart from the oval axel holes. Don't know if that causes the vibration.

Sorry if I'm making such a fuss about all this. And if this is all due because of wear, then so be it, not a big deal because I'm getting a new one soon. But it would be nice if it's possible to get this one fixed so I can try some dual runs. :-)

Jammy
22-04-2007, 15:26
Man, those running tracks have really seen some action!!:D The support band and washers seem fine, from the photos, apart from the oversised holes on the support band.

I'd like to make a suggestion, but I might be completely off the ball here. The white stuff on the running tracks don't look like dust, it seems to be damage from regular use. Have you ever tried to use a fine/medium sandpaper to smooth down the running tracks? I'm not sure if it would lead to any real improvement, especially with the fact that the rotor fins are cracked, but replace the rotor and it might just do the trick.

I have an amber Pro that developed a serious vibration at over 11k. This ball was used by all and sundry for experimentation purposes. I opened it up and the tracks look very similar to what yours looks like. I took some time and first sanded most of the serious damage down with a rougher sandpaper. Then I smoothed it down with a very fine sandpaper. For me, the sandpaper was conveniently stuck to 2 of my wife's nailfiles. She nearly killed me when she saw me and I, of course, had to replace them, but it was worth it. The ball started running real smooth again after that.

Thanks for the reply Jammy. I will use some sandpaper and smooth out the tracks this evening and see if it will improve some.

I will PM Enda about the rotor and support band, and hopefully it will be good as new soon :)

What it looks like to me is that the powder shavings from wear have been ground into the track. So the sandpaper should clean it off pretty well.

Little update on the metal. Yesterday at the live comp I couldn't get anything decent so I stopped right away as my right hand started to hurt a little. And because I couldn't leave the metal in its case today I picked it up for a few quick spins, and to my amazement I got a rather nice score of 11378 (+184) with the right hand. Offcourse I have it on video, but for some strange reason the sound is about 5 sec off sync with the video. But I will fix that later on. No record with the left hand, but alot of scores above the 10.5k marker, which I'm pretty happy about.

No updates on the 250Hz for some time now. The rotor got a few cracks in it. But since I ordered it from a different site I'm still waiting.... It took them a week to reply to my email. Then they told me I have to transfer €4.50 to their bank acount (have to pay for the transfer costs), but they didn't say to which acount number... yey, still waiting for their reply. But luckily I still have my metal.

So here is a little update on my metal session today:

No right hand record, but a few 11k scores with a max of 11.202 (-176).
But some good results with the left hand: 10.890 (+125) and then 10.931 (+41). And some other 10.7xx and 10.6xx. So this was quite a good session.

R 13.001 (+16)
L 12.424 (+252)
R 12.994

Started with 2 30s runs: 5845 and 5999 (doh)

First speed runs were around 12.8k, then took a little break and managed to get 13.234 (+179). Really happy about the nice improvement.
But to my amazement I got 13.433 (+199) the next run WOOHOO  .

Also improved the lefty with 66 rpm to 12.490.
