View Full Version : how to open powerball?
so i hear some dusty noise out of it and thought that i could open it and clean it... but when i removed the counter, the band and the two screws, i don`t know what do i have to do next... i read all the faq's but it is very confusing and not explaining anything... and without photos... so i thought that you might help me...

and a couple of things more... the rotor now moves not only up and down in idle position which is normal, but a little left-right too... and the wide mechanism on the side of the rotor now moves up and down when spinning it at ~1000rpm, and when spinning faster, it stands still in its position... is this normal? one more thing... one time when i tried to start the ball with the cord i teared the cord not so correctly and it made some strange sound - when i checked the cord - the plastic ending was broken - half of the plastic was gone somewhere... i think that maybe this could stop the rotor... i really want to open and clean it, but really don't understand this paragraph:
"Put the ball down into the vise so that the exact middle or 'equator' of the ball (for want of a better word!) is sitting snugly in the middle of the jaw surface. Gently close the vise to a point where the ball is now firmly supported. At this point, depending on what kind of a vise you have (ours is an old one and well worn!) it will literally take just an extra 1/2 turn to maybe a full turn (if the vise gearing is different to ours), and you will hear that 'pop' we are referring to!"
i'd really appreciate a better explanation or photos or a video... i`m trying to open this thing for 3 hours now...

now it started to squeak, when rotating the rotor... i really need to open it - all help very appreciated
ok, so i managed to open it by putting on the ground and ramming it with my fist... but then i don`t know how to put all those little gums... and where they should be... and now it's working worse than before...

though i dont know if this is suggested.
one easy way to do it, is to unsrew the 2 screws, after taking off the rubber band,
then place aflat headed screwdriver in the little crack and turn, it pops the ball open quite easily, and it will just pop back together again with a little elbow grease (pushing it hard)
easy as that
You wanna know how to open a powerball?
Chance for you I did a video not long ago:
Open a Regular (http://bl4dem4ster.free.fr/ouvrirpb.avi)
Open a Metal Powerball (http://bl4dem4ster.free.fr/fred/metal/metal_ouverture.avi)
Open with your hands (http://bl4dem4ster.free.fr/ouvrirpb_gouidos.avi)
Enough? :D
Arturas,
Please see the FAQ here (http://www.powerballs.com/faq.php?q=21) which explains in detail the procedure for opening your Powerball.
Regards

Obiw4n i really appreciate your answer, that was really helpful... but i have another problem. when i clean the dust, and put everything in the right place, screw it together, and then the rotor spins very easily in both directions when it is not started... well, you know, when you start it, it starts to spin in one direction very fast and in other direction slow, but now, in it's idle position i can easily spin it in both directions (i couldn`t when it was new, i`m very sure about that)... and i can`t reach high scores which i could now... any suggestions?
That's normal don't worry, it happens just after a cleaning....What you have to do is some light training or even 90s sessions to readapt the inner components like they were before.
After a while, maybe a day, you'll notice big improvements in the high speed records you achieve, but don't hope to much from it.
You'll also have to be in good shape to beat your record!

thanks Obiw4n, you calmed me down. My records are miserable actually, because i recently got it. My record now is only 9836... and then the problems started with my powerball... so no bigger scores. :) i hope i`ll reach the 10k barrier soon
Then if you're a beginner my advice are much more valuable, don't be afraid if you achieve only 10000 when your record is 10500 rpm, that's normal, you just have to wait for improvements.
For me my record is 13720, but usually don't get over 13300 in my sessions in these days... ;)

My record is 13579, which I did about 9 month ago. Usually I get about 11.3k to 13.1k, but at times I even struggle to get over 10k. It's the way it goes sometimes.

i used it for a while now, but it still rotates when idle on the axis it shouldn`t very easily... and that really affects... will it really fix itself by just using it?
Try to open your PB and remove the white dust on the white ring surface/plastic shell...
Mine was making a "clok clok" when spinningthis weekend...
Opened, cleaned...sound perfect now!:)

Joshua - read the whole thread.
will it really fix itself by just using it?
Normaly: Yes :D
I can even say you that since one year i never opened mine and it's still working fine (i did a 13500 recently).
Regards,
Vincent.
i watched the video of the opening with hands,
how do you just pop it like that?, my hands are like all red and i still can't "pop" the ball open

Newer Powerballs are sometimes not quite so easy to open. But I think it's like doing a karate chop on a plank of wood. Do it hard enough to break the wood and you won't feel it. Don't do it hard enough to break the wood and it hurts.
If you're talking about the video where you take off the grip, take out the screws, rest the Powerball on it's side and whack it with the soft underside of your fist, than all you need to do it make sure you whack it hard enough, that's all. Gotta do it pretty hard really.
If it hurts though, just get a cheap G-Clamp from a hardware store or something. I got one for about £2, and it works fine. Just a bit slower, that's all.
