It just takes practice. Some people get it straight away some don't. Try doing it with your other hand, often that seems to help for some reason.

Hi neilftt, and welcome to the forums.

Don't worry, I'm sure the Powerball is fine, and that you just need to get used to the motion. I also couldn't get the thing started when I first got mine. I'd seen people using them a while before I got mine, and always saw them spinning at high speed. So I would whip the string out and shake my hand back and forth, only for the Powerball to slow and stop.

The trick is just getting the motion right, but it won't take long. Hold the Powerball with the rotor facing upwards and the counter pointing towards the floor, and hold it like you're holding a wine glass. Whip the string out, grip it tight, and then "stir" the Powerball about 2 times a second. My favourite analogy is to imagine holding a spoon and stiring a saucepan of soup.

Persevere, you'll get there, and when you do you'll love it!

I know, for 20 minutes or so when I first got a Powerball I was thinking, "This thing is rubbish!". 10 minutes after that, until two and a bit YEARS later, i.e. now, the Powerball is still the best gadget/toy/exercise device/rehab device I have ever had, and I imagine I'll be buried with my entire collection!
