Hi, I'm an idiot.

My ball was making 'bumpy' noises so it seemed like a good idea to oil it with silicone based 'q' oil at the time. DOH! Only then did the principles of it's working (friction) come to mind. so erm...

I can't live without this thing... tried to fix it (prolly made it worse) by pouring in hot water, salt, toothpaste, shampoo, and...lastly dish washing liquid.... Was gonna try turpentine but then... I came to my senses.

Did I bugger it up for good or can i still save it by cleaning it?

Somebody shoot me,
An idiot

bet you did'nt try lighter fluid did you?...as the only solvent made from oil it's probably the only thing that will fully dissolve oil, and as lighter fluid is refined it does'nt damage the plastic either.

I'll go one better, I took mine apart and put powder graphite around the power band! What a nightmare. It spun out of control with almost no friction. There is a happy ending however. I found the best way to clean it. Use a toothbrush and a cleanser called Barkeeper's Friend. I doubt it's available in the UK it's a US product. Scrub all the black caked up plastic off the two halves and wipe down with alcohol. It will take a little while for the friction to build back up but it will be smoothe as silk until then. So now we know no oil and no graphite. :)

This must be the funniest thing I've ever read on these forums!

Ethanol seems to do the trick. That's ethanol - not methanol!
