I think that Nanosecond decided to do this because they only want to make one type of rotor. And for the Neon versions you do need a magnet+PCB, thus an assymetric rotor.

    Hi guys,

The counter weight has been made a standard feature of all Powerballs for two reasons:

The counterweight adds a degree of smoothness to the newer models which was not present in previous versions. In fact, Tim you should be able to vouch for the fact that your old Powerballs feel consistently 'rougher' than the newer ones you have?

Secondly, we have found that the addition of the counterweight to the Powerballs has contributed to a certain degree of longevity of the support bands, particularly in the case of Powerball users with poor techniques - this is again owing to the new 'smoothness' of operation of the Powerballs.

    Regards

That's true actually. I do try to always maintain a good grip and keep my Powerballs as smooth as possible, but yes, the ones without the counter-weight do feel as though the inner track is slightly more rough. However, in my own personal experience I find this slight rough surface provides a better grip and therefore a more effective rolling surface for the axle.

EDIT: What I might try is swapping the rotors around...see if the one with the counter-weight goes better in the casing that's always had the rotor without the counter-weight...

I would guess that having the counterbalance actually lengthens the life of the powerball.

It certainly increases the life-span of the Powerball when technique is incorrect as the 'knocking' does not affect the rotor support as badly.

Also, the counter balance greatly increases the ease of use - especially in a rehabilitative environment as the ball motion is completely smooth'

I've only just realised that the comments in the initial post here were mine! I would like to point out that even though my records with the Powerball without a counter-weight are 13579 and 13476, (left and right hand respectively), I have also achieved over 13400 with the Powerball with the counter-weight.

It's only in my own personal tests with my Powerballs that the older ones have tended to come out on top. I've spoken to several other people, to see about sending them my fast ball to run some tests with it, to see if THEY can reach higher speeds too, but have never done that...it's probably just because I've used the older ones more and they're more accustomed to my technique and style.

I'm certainly not implying that all newer ones are slower than all older ones...thought I'd better point that out!
